🎤 Microphone Recommendations

Investing in an external USB microphone is key to enhancing your audio and there are options for every budget.

I use an ATR-2100 but that’s since been replaced with the ATR2500x. The list price is $149 but you can find it on sale as low as $49.

Perhaps the most popular is the Blue Yeti, though I know a number of people who have had issues with this microphone. The list price is $130, but you can find it on sale for $85.

Matt Halloran of ProudMouth strongly recommends the Sampson Q2U over the Blue Yeti, and I second that. Its list price is $126, but it’s often on sale for $59.

On the higher end, Shure mics are also great, though they run about $250. One thing to keep in mind is that your audience will rarely notice the difference between the audio quality in the Samson Q2U vs. a Shure microphone.

While the above microphones work great for computers, they’re not ideal for use with smartphones or on the go. For that, you’ll want a lavalier microphone, which is those small microphones that clip onto your clothing.

The PowerDeWise Lavalier Microphone is a great option that ranges from $30-$50.

  • Make sure to scroll down and add the appropriate adapter from the “Frequently Bought Together” section
  • This microphone can also work with your computer so it’s great for virtual meetings when traveling.
  • It also connects to DSLR cameras so it’s a great all-around microphone to have in your toolbox.

The PQRQP 2 Pack Wireless Lavalier Microphones are a good option if you’d prefer a wireless lav mic. The downside to these is that they’re a lot bulkier than a regular lav mic and don’t work great with all attire (like many dresses and high neck shirts).

You’ll want to get a boom or scissor arm for your microphone to keep your desk clear and easily maintain access to your keyboard, notes, etc.. With this, you can easily swing the microphone in while recording videos or in meetings, then swing it right back out of the way when you’re done.

I have the InnoGear Boom Arm Mic Stand which ranges from $17-$23, so well worth it! This works with most microphones but it’s good to always double check that any boom arm you get is compatible with your microphone.
